Malta’s climbing community has outgrown its current facilities. If everything was left as is, climbers would have had limited room to develop.
We believe that everything has its right place. Back in the day, quite a few years back, anybody who wanted to train for climbing had to set up their own walls.
The first wall I climbed on, was a mish mash of custom made holds, pieces of wood and a fairly aggressive angle. Then this wall closed down, so we got together, pooled some money, bought some wooden panels, chains and ordered Holdz and set up an 12 metres squared climbing wall in my garage.
Then we had the Sliema scouts wall, a massive improvement. A group of mostly Spanish climbers put together Rocky Box, and when this closed down, Gebla filled in that gap. As you all know, most of our team has spent countless hours at Gebla.
But soon we realised there was still a gap. The community was growing, but the facilities were not. We went down various routes, including reaching out to government to get a facility for climbing.
This proved to be too slow-moving. So we took the bull by its horns and decided to develop the kind of facility we wanted to climb in.
Crashpad solves the gap between the growth in demand and the lack of facilities.
A European-standard indoor facility featuring Olympic-grade walls like the Tension Board 2, the TITAN comp wall, professional coaching with recognised bouldering certification, UK-standard coaching and operating procedures, IFSC-standard bouldering walls and all that you see on the Crashpad walls today.
But the today’s climber and fitness enthusiast wants more than just a climbing gym. The modern climber wants a place which revolves around the climbing lifestyle.
This is why Crashpad is more than just a climbing gym:
- We have a well-equipped strength and conditioning area so that climbers don’t need to get a 3rd party gym membership
- We have a chillout area where climbers can hang
- Our healthy food and cafe run by professionals in the industry will provide a top-notch workplace with high-quality food, coffee, drinks and snacks (run by 3rd Generation Cafe Malta)
- Yoga, Stretching, Mobility and Pilates Reformer machines for overall wellness (run by Island Yoga)
- Ice bath and sauna for recovery
- And Physiotherapy, Injury Prevention, Strength and Conditioning Coaching (run by The Pro Clinic)
All of this is within a 2000 square metres of space designed to support climbers of all levels while fostering a community.
And the timing couldn’t be better:
- The indoor climbing market is flourishing: €5.3B globally by 2030 (~9.3% annual growth)
- In Europe alone, the market size is already at ~€1 billion in 2025 and growing rapidly.
- Malta’s local climbing economy set to more than double from €2M to €4.7M by 2035
